Rodrigo García’s «Las locuras» to Close the Festival

The closing film of the 40th edition of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival marks a new return to Mexican cinema by acclaimed filmmaker Rodrigo García, who was born in Colombia and raised in Mexico.

The Netflix production weaves together a series of interconnected stories featuring numerous leading figures of Latin American cinema, including Chilean actor Alfredo Castro and Mexican artists Adriana Barraza (Oscar and Golden Globe nominee for Babel), Cassandra Ciangherotti, Ángeles Cruz, Natalia Solián, Naian González Norvind, Raúl Briones, Ilse Salas, Fernanda Castillo, and Mónica del Carmen, among many others.

The son of Nobel Prize–winning author Gabriel García Márquez returns to Argentina—where he directed the miniseries Santa Evita—to present Las locuras on November 15. García has built a remarkable international career, beginning in 2000 with Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, starring Glenn Close and Cameron Diaz, which won the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Five years later, he signed Nine Lives, once again working with Close, earning the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. In 2008 he directed Anne Hathaway in Passengers, followed by Naomi Watts in Mother and Child the next year, and in 2011 he reunited with Close for Albert Nobbs, which earned her one of the film’s three Oscar nominations.

As for Alfredo Castro, who won Best Actor at the 2015 Mar del Plata Film Festival for The Club, he has received the Platino Award four times for his acclaimed performances in Los perros, El príncipe, Karnawal, and the series Los mil días de Allende. He also won Best Actor at BAFICI for Tony Manero.
