New Authors: first films, new visions

Feature debuts and new voices from international cinema come to the 41st Mar del Plata International Film Festival.
New Authors is an opportunity to discover filmmakers beginning to develop a personal vision. The section, part of Panorama, brings together debut features and new voices from contemporary cinema across different countries.
Club Kid, one of the major revelations of Cannes, marks the directorial debut of comedian Jordan Firstman, who also stars alongside Cara Delevingne. The story follows a man who resists leaving behind his life of excess in New York’s clubs. When he unexpectedly discovers he has a ten-year-old son, he must confront an immaturity he can no longer keep dodging.
Mar del Plata will be the launchpad for The Stars, The Boy and The Piano, by Taiwanese director Hsie Chi-Wen, which will have its world premiere here. The film is based on the true story of Shang-Huan, a prodigiously gifted musician who found in the piano a way to overcome the barriers created by his autism.
American filmmaker Dustin Brown presents Solidarity, which tells the story of the unlikely relationship between a Mexican-born seamstress and a Lithuanian butcher. It stars legendary Mexican actress Elpidia Carrillo.
Pacífico, by Riccardo Gabrielli, is one of two Colombian films selected for this edition of the Festival. The cast includes Juan Pablo Raba and Marlon Moreno, two well-known figures in Colombian cinema.
From Brazil comes Fátima & Yolanda, by first-time directors Renata Di Carmo and Marcela Mariz. It is a dramedy about the bond between two older women, starring celebrated Brazilian actresses Nívea Maria and Zezé Barbosa.
The selection is rounded out by Mommy Blue, by Bernadette Mayer.
