Synopsis

At the foot of Mt. Kinugasa in Kyoto stands Kohoan, famed for its goose paintings by Kishimoto Nangaku. During WWII, Satoko, Nangaku?s former mistress, visits the temple per his dying wish. The priest Jikai, enchanted by her, allows her to stay. Jinen, a young acolyte from a poor background, is mistreated by Jikai but pitied by Satoko. After learning of Jinen?s harsh life, Satoko sleeps with him. Soon after, Jikai vanishes mysteriously. Jinen and Satoko both leave the temple. Satoko later realizes Jinen was behind Jikai?s disappearance. Twenty years on, the temple thrives, and tourists hear tales of the torn mother goose painting.
