Synopsis

Set in 1862, just before the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate, this period comedy follows Saheiji, a witty drifter stranded in a Shinagawa whorehouse due to unpaid debts. Though first seen as a freeloader, he wins over courtesans and staff with his charm and cleverness. Amid a world of schemers, he brings humor and order while hiding his struggle with tuberculosis.

Yûzô Kawashima

Yûzô Kawashima joined Shochiku in 1938 and debuted with The Man Who Has Returned (1944). Known for his witty comedies and ?positive escapism,? he thrived at Nikkatsu with works like Suzaki Paradise (1956) and Sun in the Last Days of the Shogunate (1957). He passed away in 1963.
