Authors: filmmakers with a voice of their own

Eight films by directors from different backgrounds are part of Panorama at the 41st Mar del Plata International Film Festival.

Authors is a section dedicated to filmmakers with a voice of their own. It brings together films by directors from different backgrounds, each with a singular vision of the world, and is part of Panorama.

American director James Gray, known for his classical style and deep family dramas, presents Paper Tiger, which competed for the Palme d’Or in the Official Competition of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Two brothers pursue the American dream, but become entangled in a dangerous Russian mafia plot that terrorizes their family. As betrayal becomes possible, their bond is put to the test.

Electric Venus (La Vénus électrique), by Pierre Salvadori, was the film chosen to open the latest edition of the Cannes Film Festival. It is the new work of one of France’s most celebrated directors.

Also from Cannes comes Rehearsals for a Revolution, by Iranian filmmaker Pegah Ahangarani, winner of the Best Documentary award. The film is an intimate portrait of four decades of Iranian history, between personal memory and collective experience.

In Gentle Monster, Austrian director Marie Kreutzer follows a woman who discovers a terrible truth about her husband. Léa Seydoux, who is being tipped for an Oscar nomination for this role, leads the cast, with Catherine Deneuve in a key supporting part.

The Only Living Pickpocket in New York marks the directorial debut of Noah Segan, an actor with an extensive career. It stars John Turturro as a pickpocket who steals from the wrong person and finds himself trapped in a situation that could cost him his life. The cast also includes Giancarlo Esposito, Steve Buscemi, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Tatiana Maslany.

The section also includes Frosted Window, by director Kim Jong-Kwan, and Se busca, by Kenya Márquez — an opportunity to explore contemporary Mexican cinema.

Argentine cinema is represented by La revista del Cervantes: el documental, by Gonzalo Demaría, director of Nene revancha (2023).
