Synopsis

Sandra, an orangutan who spent two decades in the Buenos Aires Zoo, became the first non-human person legally recognized by an Argentine court as a subject of rights and a sentient being. But if Sandra has rights, what kind of life does she deserve? To answer this unprecedented question, Judge Elena turns to primatologist Aldo, who observes Sandra?s environment and behavior in search of clues to her inner world. Following Sandra?s journey from an Argentine courtroom to a sanctuary in the United States, the film explores how law and science shape her future, while decisions made in the name of protection continually challenge the meaning of freedom and rights.
